Western Region

All treks starting in Pokhara, the lake district of Nepal, are reached by bus via a 200 km highway with Kathmandu or by plane.

Pokhara city (910m) is located in a valley full of deep gorges carved by the Seti River. Climb up the surrounding hillside for attractive views of the mountain, the countryside and lakes and for visits to the peaceful Gurung and Thakali villages. Sarankot, Kahnukot and Nau Danda are three hill top observing points offering spectacular sights of the entire Annapurna Range. Walking from the airstrip, it should take three hours up to Sarankot and Kahnukot. Nau Danda also known as Nag Danda (1,443m) is a classical trek hill. It is the first leg leading to Jomsom and Annapurna Base camp. Another equally famous trekking spot is Nuwakot (153m) which is 18 km south. There is an old fort and snow covered ranges between Dhaulagiri to Ganesh Himal they can be seen towards the northern horizon.

(A) Jomsom Muktinath: Jomsom lies in the upper Kali Gandaki Valley beyond Annapurna. The trek starts from Pokhara; a journey lasting about six or seven days. The trail proceeds via Baidam, through Sarankot and Ghorepani. From Ghorepani, the trek descends into the valley of the sacred Kali Gandaki river and the deepest gorges in the world. The trek features broad changes in landscape, vegetation and culture within a short distance. After Tukche (2,586m.) the landscape is dry and bare. It is full of Thakali settlements. In the Kali Gandaki valley (upper) beyond Ghasa to Marpha exits a Thakali village, monasteries, pine woods, sow-fed streams and fields of crops. Jomsom , squeezed between two giant mountains ridges, lies on the river bed of Kali Gandaki. It’s very windy here after 10 a.m. From Pokhara, you can also fly directly to Jomsom. Following the Kali Gandaki River northward for about 2 hours will bring you to the turn off for the route to Muktinath. Muktinath lies about 18 km north-east of Jomsom. This famous place of Hindu pilgrimage is located in the vast and dry shadow of the Himalayas. The importance of Muktinath as a pilgrimage place for the Hindu abounds in scared Saligrams as the emblem of Narayan. There is a small pagoda. Temple of Jwala Mai is equally worshipped both by the Hindu and Buddhists alike. The trek from Pokhara to Muktinath takes 18 days round trip.

(B) Annapurna Circuit: This is an epic trek, circling the Annapurna Range and offering a cross section of Nepal. Trek through lowland rice fields, pine forests and even deserts in the Annapurna. A variety of ethnic groups and the ever-changing Himalayan landscape combine to make this trek a scenic and culturally diverse experience. Beginning in the Marsyangi River Valley, traverse a region of subtropical vegetation and cultivated fields. At Manang, the trail leads westward into the rocky and trackless. The highest point of the trek, Thorang La (17,100ft.) presents a stunning panorama extending from Tibet to Dhaulagiri.

Rest in Muktinath, the site of Hindu and Buddhist holy shrines. Then descend into the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world’s deepest canyon (23,000ft.)Follow ancient trade routes between India and China, trekking Southward through the homeland of mixed cultures. Temperatures are generally warmer and acclimatization more gradual here than in khumbu, the crossing of throng La, however, requires two days of strenuous effort of high elevation. The circuitous trek begins at Gorkha halfway to Pokhara, up to the Manang Valley over to Muktinath and down to Jomsom and back to Pokhara.

Annapurna Circuit of Nepal has been ranked number one by iExplore, the world’s leading for off-the-beaten-path travel, in its recently published top 10 routes for exploring a pie run the gamut from day-tripper walks and hikes to muliweek treks into high-altitude mountains. In it’s admittedly audacious picks for the world’s top adventures on foot, Nepal’s Hiking Annapurna Circuit has been voted the best. Lynn Schnaiberg, a Chicago-based writer in iExplore writes.” This Classic Himalayan trek is a classic for good reason.

It encapsulates the best of Nepal, wrapping around the stunning Annapurna range to put you in the shadow of peaks that pierce 26,000 feet. Yak herds, eagle-like Himalayan griffons, blue sheep (so called because of the blue-gray hue their coat turns in winter), fluttering Buddhist prayer flags, and hot springs dot this central Nepal route, which starts in lush green foothills and climbs into high-altitude desert typical of the Tibetan plateau.

The approach leads through rhododendron and bamboo forests through a country side rich in mountains panoramas and village activity. Follow the Modi Khola up the narrow course of its river canyon.
